For Abhishek Singh from Mumbai, India, the College of Business and Economics (CBE) at the Australian National University (ANU) offered him the most advantages among all institutions in the country to launch a global career.

“I could choose electives such as Accounting Analytics, Corporate Social Responsibility and Financial Statement Analysis, which were not being offered at other universities,” Singh, a current Master of Accounting student at CBE, says. He was also impressed with the small size of the university and on-campus living options.

The above are just a sampling of features that attract exceptional students like Singh to CBE from Australia, the Asia-Pacific and beyond. At the College, students pursuing postgraduate programmes in business and economics not only receive a superior research-led degree, but a well-rounded experience that translates to success anywhere in the world.

Singh and his cohort have found that the additional opportunities on offer at CBE, such as immersive internships, provide true value.

Not only did Singh land an internship with BellchambersBarrett — which subsequently led to a full-time job offer — he was also Resident Advisor at Burgmann College and volunteered at the ANU Tax Clinic.

Singh believes that these openings provided him with valuable insights of what it is like to work in the accounting field. He found that the programme content enabled him to “get real life exposure to what he learned in the classroom.”

Tarida Angela, an Indonesian Master of Business Information Systems graduate, is equally grateful to CBE for delivering curricula that are dynamic and relevant, both in and beyond Australia.

“Through a CBE elective course called CBE Internship, my internship at F1 Solutions Australia has helped me in various ways, particularly in developing my network, self-awareness, and critical thinking,” Angela enthuses. “Furthermore, I now have mentors to turn to when I have questions about the field of my work, which has really supported me in achieving my career goal of becoming an expert in my field.”

Indeed, CBE’s experiential opportunities open doors for students wherever they go. As a student representative for Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, Singh assisted in promoting the programme and profession across universities and schools in Canberra by attending student-organisation events, market days or career fairs. He also attended functions where he met and networked with industry employers and accountants.

As the ACT Regional Officer for UN Youth Australia, Angela put her communication skills to excellent use when she coordinated a conference at Batemans Bay High School. She also worked as a consultant for 180 Degrees Consulting, which allowed her to experience collaborating with people of different disciplinary backgrounds.

“This experience significantly encouraged me to think critically, holistically, and how to communicate the product of my thoughts efficiently in professional scenarios,” says Angela. “It really complemented my studies because I got to have hands-on opportunities to apply what I have learned in Business Information Systems.”

CBE also offers students wishing to gain additional industry experience many other avenues, such as participating in a Special Industry Project with strategy and management-consultant mentors, and getting involved with the Student Managed Fund

Excellent services that turn students into job-ready graduates

At the same time, students can take advantage of CBE Careers’ excellent services for industry placements, employability initiatives, networking events, graduate-employment partnerships and interview preparation. For example, MomentuM, CBE’s professional-development mentorship initiative, focuses on leadership, communication, personal brand and career development, critical thinking and teamwork, achieving its objectives through workshops, Mentee meet-ups and personal mentor training sessions.

Angela credits her Outstanding Intern of the Year Award to CBE Careers’ in-depth support and training, which included honing project-management skills, understanding work ethics, improving work communication skills, as well as writing reports effectively and efficiently. “ANU has played such a critical role in my victory,” she says.

Industry-relevant programmes

CBE programmes provide students with a global edge in their careers. “The learning in-class was based on real-workplace scenarios and not just what is in the books, which is critical, as you are learning what you are more likely going to experience in real life. The research style of learning was a plus, as it develops critical thinking skills necessary in any field of work,” Singh explains.

Angela believes that CBE’s combination of teaching business and information systems as part of her master’s degree allowed her to marry her passions of engineering and business — which would enable her to “develop a multi-disciplinary approach, and also learn valuable skills that are highly sought-after in today’s workforce.”

In the latest 2021 Times Higher Education Ranking of Graduate Employability tracking top universities producing the most employable graduates, ANU ranked first in Australia and 20th globally. Altogether, CBE’s holistic student experience, industry-relevant postgraduate programmes, support for applied learning, and career services make ANU an easy choice for global career success.
